Scottish Scenic Routes Competition2013

Whilst much of our work comprises of commissioned projects, we strongly believe in the importance of design competitions, which help to showcase design skills and innovation.

This project was to design an installation for Loch Lubnaig Beag in the Trossachs national park, Scotland.

Our proposal was for a contemporary viewing pier, which would bring the viewer closer to the loch and take advantage of the height difference across the site. Furthermore, visitors would be encouraged to leave their cars to gain a new and alternative experience of the surrounding landscape.

The concept comprised of two diagonal timbers connected with steel rods. The construction was designed to be legible so that the spectator can understand how it is built.

The ‘V’ shape of the walkway was designed as an abstract representation of the surrounding hillsides. Between the timber uprights, coloured acrylic sheets acted as a playful intervention picking up the colours of the Trossachs from Spring to Autumn.

The intention was to pre-fabricate all of the above ground components for ease of delivery and construction.

Although we were not successful in winning this competition, our entry was featured in a traveling exhibition and published in a competition booklet.
